The Courtney Gallery (previously St John Street Gallery) is situated in the historic Georgian Market Town of Ashbourne in Derbyshire, the ideal place to soak up the historical atmosphere and present-day culture of the area. One of the largest art galleries in the region, we exhibit a variety of contemporary art, including original paintings, prints, sculpture and ceramics over four floors of gallery space.
Once Ashbourne’s Magistrate’s Court, this spacious grade 2 listed building now showcases more than forty of the area’s most talented artists in relaxed and informal surroundings. The work of renowned artists further afield is also available, and we host various events by local artists, e.g. art exhibitions, workshops, art talks and live demonstrations, as well as our own book club and other cultural events. We have sponsored the art prizes for the annual Ashbourne Festival including hosting fringe events, and we support young and upcoming local artists in collaboration with the Peak District Artisans.
After exploring the historical buildings (e.g. the Grade I listed Old Grammar School, St Oswald’s Parish Church, the 17th century Mansion of Dr John Taylor) and many quirky shops around town, why not relax in our spacious and dog-friendly, award-winning Café upstairs.
We are within walking distance from the popular Tissington Walking and Cycling Trail and popular tourist attractions like Dovedale, Ilam Village, Milldale and Carsington Water are within 10 minutes’ drive.
Treat yourself to a truly unique experience where you can enjoy both great food and a friendly ambiance steeped in art, history and culture.
The gallery can accommodate visitors with access requirements on the main ground floor, with just a small threshold at the entrance. The upstairs area (including café) can only be reached via steps.
For any access requirements or assistance please contact us and we will be happy to help.
