Donald Hamilton Fraser RA
Donald exhibited his highly acclaimed work in Paris, New York, Tokyo, Zurich and many other cities around the world. The list of galleries that own or have exhibited his work is phenomenal. Donald participated in many of the most significant exhibitions of British work including the Royal Academy’s 25 Years of British Painting, where he was also a Royal Academician and a trustee since 1995.
This beautiful image by Royal Academician Donald Hamilton Fraser has a very special story. Before his death in 2009, Fraser had been keen to contribute to the The British Heart Foundation]’s Mending Broken Hearts Appeal, but sadly was unable to complete any work. With this in mind his wife kindly suggested and gave permission for a silkscreen to be made from a valentines card that Fraser had once painted for her, as she felt that the image was highly appropriate. Fraser created a valentines card for his wife every year of their sixty year marriage.
Depicting three paintbrushes that appear to be floating vertically, the shapes they are creating in red paint are hearts; the one on the left the least finished, the one on the right fully completed. With two of the three hearts appearing ‘broken’ and the third ‘mended’, this is the perfect image for the project, which involved 15 leading artists creating a print each for our ‘Breath of Life’ portfolio.
